Franse 'Citizen Reporters' krijgen de ruimte van Le Monde

Le Monde is de eerste krant die het bloggen via zijn homepage aanbiedt en promoot. Pourquoi? Zodat de lezers daarmee hun eigen 'journal' kunnen maken en delen, met teksten en foto's.

Mooi voorbeeld van een manier waarop 'amateur journalists' letterlijk naast de professionele readactie kunnen staan. Wel moeten de bloggers zich voor het openen van een blog zich conformeren aan de (gedrags)regels. Waarmee Le Monde uiteraard elke aansprakelijkheid voor de inhoud van de blogs uitsluit.

In Amerika hebben de reguliere media recentelijk ervaren dat ze de bloggers serieus moeten gaan nemen. Maar verder dan het onderkennen van het bestaan ervan lijkt het nog niet te gaan.

This is despite the fact that the number of people reading even the most influential blogs is tiny. Statistics by web influence ranking firm HitWise reveal that the most popular political blog racks up only 0.0051% of all net visits per day.

Als meer nationale media als Le Monde starten met het aanbieden van blogs kan het nu nog kleine bereik van de onafhankelijke bloggers in een klap veranderen. En daarmee wellicht ook de invloed op diezelfde media van de bloggers. Lang leve de vrijheid van meningsuiting.

In dit verband is het ook interessant om de ontwikkeling van WikiNews in de gaten te houden.

Both Wikinews and Wikipedia run on Wiki software, an application that allows users to collectively author web documents. Each page on the site contains an "edit" link, which users can click to edit passages created by other writers.

Jimmy Wales (the Wikipedia co-founder) believes the process of collaborative editing has allowed Wikipedia -- which contains more than 1 million entries in more than 75 languages -- to maintain a neutral tone on a wide variety of controversial topics. He expects the same process to prevent bias in Wikinews coverage.

"The incentive for behavior in a wiki is to write in such a way that your writing can survive," he said. "The only way it can survive is if your writing is acceptable to an extremely wide audience."

Alex Halavais, graduate director for the informatics school at the University at Buffalo, said in an e-mail interview that Wikinews has much in common with two other efforts at citizen journalism, Indymedia.org and South Korea's OhmyNews.

Halavais believes Wikinews' collaborative editing process will help foster a neutral tone in the content of its stories. However, he thinks writers' biases will affect the selection of articles contributed, in much the same way that profit motives impact what mainstream media outlets cover.

"One of the things mainstream media does, for better or for worse, is report on news they expect will drive sales," he said. "This means ignoring foreign news, for example, in many cases, because a local audience is not as interested. Since there is not the same economic incentive, the question is what the agenda of Wikinews will look like. I suspect it will reflect the interests and lives of its citizen reporters."

As it matures, Wikinews won't resemble a mainstream news site and won't compete directly with established media outlets, Halavais said.

Ik ben er van overtuigd dat meerdere vormen van nieuwsvoorziening naast elkaar zullen gaan bestaan, zij het ieder met een eigen unieke functie in het medialandschap. We zien dat immers met alle vormen van nieuwe media gebeuren. Daarom sluit ik vandaag af met een quote van iemand die dat jaren geleden ook al constateerde, in 1964 wel te verstaan:

"The medium is the message!"
